Project Overview

First Solar, helped bring solar energy to Honduras with local conglomerate Grupo Terra by the way of a 25MW ground-mount, solar energy project called Del Sur.

The project began commercial operation in July 2015, providing a viable renewable energy source to the people of Honduras. First Solar is the technology provider as well as the project’s engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) provider based on the company’s proven track record, experience with utility-scale solar and our superior module technology performance in hot and humid climates.

The Del Sur solar project occupies approximately 70 hectares of land 9 km south of the city of Choluteca and is powered by more than 290,000 First Solar high energy yield, thin film PV modules, producing enough solar energy to power 50,000 Honduras homes and displace the equivalent of more than 15,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year. At the peak of construction, the project created approximately 750 construction jobs.

The Del Sur project has further diversified Honduras’ energy portfolio with clean, affordable solar electricity.
