Solar Grid Integration Increases Grid Stability

When integrated into the grid, solar photovoltaic energy can be an important component to maintaining grid stability. Agua Caliente, a photovoltaic (PV) solar plant capable of generating 290 MW, is connected to the grid via the 500 kV Palo Verde Hassayampa transmission line from Arizona to California.

On March 21st, 2014, the line connecting the Palo Verde nuclear plant to the grid was taken out of service causing the voltage on the line to fluctuate. The Agua Caliente solar plant was called upon to support the line in order to maintain grid stability. Dr. Mahesh Morjaria details how Agua Caliente was capable of decreasing voltage fluctuations when it was operating during peak usage hours and how adding solar energy can support overall grid stability.
