The semiconductor materials (CdTe and CdS) are sourced from the byproducts of mining operations. First Solar modules incorporate only micron amounts of semiconductor material – about 1% of the semiconductor material used in typical crystalline silicon solar modules. In the past few years, First Solar has been able to decrease the amount of semiconductor material by more than 20%.
